Sugar Shack Donuts

Maple Bacon, Coconut, and Chocolate Glazed Donuts

Maple Bacon, Coconut, and Chocolate Glazed Donuts

I love how places are popping up around town that specialize in just one thing: pies (Proper Pie), croissants (Sub Rosa Bakery {open back up PLEASE!!}), and now donuts at Sugar Shack. We Americans should do how the Asians do; focus on only one dish and do it perfectly!  Whether it be roast chicken, noodle soup, tacos, or donuts; prepare one item and make it mind-blowingly delicious.  This approach certainly yields the tastiest of all iterations.

After many weeks of pushing back the grand opening, the much-anticipated Sugar Shack is finally open.  There have been lines out the door since they’ve opened, and for good reason.  The donuts have a pleasingly soft chew with enough substance to fill you up.The fried orbs of dough are the perfect canvas for the imaginative toppings: Irish toffee, Butterfinger, maple-bacon, and chocolate popcorn just to name a few. Yum, yum, and yum…and did I say YUM.  The maple-bacon donut was shockingly good.  The flavor of the maple glaze was intense and the thick cut bacon was quality.  It tasted like the essence of a French toast breakfast you'd get at a diner. All it was missing was a side of eggs.

I am glad to say that Sugar Shack is a delightful addition to the Richmond food scene.  It warms my heart to see passionate people make food with such care and pride…people who understand that when you focus on one product you are bound to make it remarkable.
